My Mimi

by Alice on September 10, 2010

Mimi is seven years old and also happens to be my middle child. Her world revolves around glitter, sparkles, reading, and swimming. We cannot walk by any store without having to stop when anything shimmery is involved. While at Fred Meyer’s grocery and department store last night, all we were suppose to buy was milk. But when we walked through the door, Mimi’s laser focused eyes caught a glimpse of a black sequin studded beret. “Oh mom… isn’t this beautiful?” Before I knew it she was wearing the hat and looking at herself in the mirror. I admit she looked very cute and clearly possesses the self-confidence I never had needed to wear such a hat. I usually say no to these types of spontaneous and impulsive purchases but last night I decided to buy it for her.

I would never have looked twice at this beret but not Mimi. She was born to wear hats like these. When I look at this picture, I’m reminded she is heading into the tween years. Next thing you know she will not be asking my permission for buying clothes. So for one night I was the good mom. The mom who gave in and you know what? I’m okay with it.

Wonderful! I’m so glad you bought her the hat. Sometimes as a mom you just have to give in and this seems to me to be something she will remember forever, you know?

I would have bought the beret too. It’s so easy to make them happy now, and I’m not sure it always will be, so those little extras today are priceless.

You are a good mom!! I am always amazed at watching my children as they discover who they want to be and show that inner confidence of who they are!! That is the best! And, I think those small steps or in this case…a purchase.. help them realize they were right about themselves!! And, for heaven’s sake who can resist a black bedazzled beret?!! You should find one for yourself Alice…I’m absolutely sure you can rock it!! ~Chris Ann

I really hope my daughter has more self confidence and a better sense of herself than I did as a kid. Your daughter has a great sense of style – and an amazing smile.

I love this post. I agree that it’s so great to see & appreciate how our children are different from us and really celebrate that with them. You know, instead of trying to encourage the mini-me thing. Mimi seems like a vibrant light in the world (which, actually, sounds a lot like her mom). :)

Thanks for your sweet comments guys. My sister was telling me how Mimi “owns” the beret like no one’s business.

She looks great in her beret. The glitter makes her beautiful eyes shine even more. Great picture!
